Increased demand for Non-Farm Assured Lambs through Farm Stock Scotland.
Farm Stock Scotland has seen increased demand for non-farm assured Scottish prime lambs,with a growing number of buyers coming further North seeking stock primarilyfor export markets.
Traditionally, FSS has focussed strongly on supplying farm assured lambs to UK processors, primarily for UK retailers and we continue to have excellent demand for farm assured stock. However, the development of these additional export orientated outlets gives our members another marketing option.
For farmers who, for whatever reason, choose not to undertake a farm assurance inspection, we can now offer access to a wider range of abattoir buyers for suitable prime lambs. Our experienced fieldsman are able to advise farmers on the requirements. Mandy Grierson, Procurement Officer for Farm Stock Scotland explained, “ Our farmers who have been sending lambs to these new outlets have so far been delighted with the results” she added, “It’s great to have good competition for non-farm assured lambs on a deadweight basis,” as traditionally most non-farm assured lambs have had to go through the live ring.”
Importantly, non-farmassured does not mean there are no requirements. Farmerssupplying these outlets must have a valid VAN(Veterinary Attestation Number) obtained through their localveterinary practice, alongside meeting the normal identification, traceabilityand movement requirements.
