Trading Update – 14th August 2026
Cattle
Prime cattle have been in shorter supply over the last week, particularly on the eastern side of Scotland, with many finishers understandably focused on the cereal harvest and second-cut silage. Base prices for clean cattle are around 600–610p/kg, with Angus to 625p/kg base. Deals have increasingly been done as the week has progressed to fill abattoir lairages. More cattle required for next week.
Cull cow prices have come under some real pressure over the last week due to a significant increase in cull numbers, particularly from the dairy sector in England. Cow prices are around 520–535p/kg base, with further falls looking likely in the short term.
With grain now filling stores and yields looking promising, we have seen an uptick in demand for suckler-bred store cattle from both Scottish and English finishers. More store cattle are required from all areas.
We also have huge ongoing demand for large numbers of beef x dairy store cattle, particularly, but not exclusively, for Angus-sired beasts.
Sheep
There has been quite a significant variation in demand for prime lambs over the last week, with base prices ranging from 680–730p/kg, although the majority of lambs have traded at 700–730p/kg. The continuing dry weather is really hampering finishing in many areas with national slaughter data showing year-to-date throughput remaining below last year's levels. Thanks to our members for consigning some really excellent-quality carcases with plenty of meat. This quality is helping the marketing team drive prices above the wider market. More lambs needed to meet demand! Please get in touch to discuss the wide variety of marketing options available.
We now have ready competition for non-farm assured prime lambs acrossheavy, standard and light weights. A VAN number is required. Please speak toyour fieldsman to discuss the increased range of options now available fornon-farm assured lambs.
With the dry weather continuing across the south of the UK, store lamb values have fallen significantly. Personally, I think they now look a really attractive option for anyone with grass or feed available. We have some excellent batches coming forward, covering a range of breeds, weights and keep lengths. If you have grass, it could be a very good time to buy store lambs. Get in touch to discuss the options available.
Organics
Organic prime cattle continue to meet firm demand, with the top beast in the last week grossing an impressive £3,137 at 740p/kg. Organic lambs are attracting a modest premium of around 10p/kg, with high seasonal numbers currently available. We also have good batches of organic store cattle available.
