Greetings Members and Customers!
The promised cold snap has finally arrived this week. Sweeping in ‘up north, dumping a load of snow on them, while freezing the rest of us to popsicles. Not conducive for a week full of working and catch up jobs, in the first official week back after the festive hiatus. However, despite what the ‘educated’ (?) think, the produce doesn’t just arrive by magic, so , onward we must march, to do battle with mother nature. Also- has anyone noticed how quiet the Veganuary army are this January? Must have come to their senses .. or otherwise. Although.. the lady that started the Veganuary trend – has since jumped ship and is now an avid meant eater! So….
Cattle
Prime
● The demand for prime cattle isgathering speed again after a slight slump towards the end of 2025 and theChristmas kill being down to three days over the two weeks. Current pricesrange from 635-640ppk with a 10ppk premium on Angus sired beats
● Cows are 525p for Dairy and535p for Beef Cows – again depending on weight and spec.
● Please book cows in early as the spots are filling up very quickly as the week goes on!
● Please give us an accurate description if we don’t get to see them so we can place them in the best spots
● Fci forms are available on ourwebsite, please make sure you use these forms, to ensure you have the mostup to date versions.
● Cattle need to be presentedclean and dry
● Cattle also need to have twoofficial tags in their ears, we cannot do anything if they do not have thecorrect identification. Our hands are tied.
● Please have cattle as ready asthey can be when booking, as when the load is booked a sudden drop in numberscan be very frustrating, as it can mean cancelling the load.
● Certain outlets will not acceptforeign cows so please let your fields person know before you book them in ifthey’re not British.
●
● The store cattle demand isstarting to step up a level after a bit of downtime after the Christmas period, many buyers have been on the phone this week looking to secure their cattlegoing forward.
● Please think about when youwould like to be moving on your cattle and let us know.
Sheep
● Prime Hoggs are starting tocome on a little faster this week, although the afore mentioned cold snap hasstopped play with hauliers and abattoirs - leaving a bit of a backlog, so please just bare with us until thecountry starts moving again. Trade seems to have faltered slightly and comeback to 680-700ppk depending in location and spec. This is quite normal for thestart of the year and hopefully we will see the lift start towards the end ofnext week – fingers crossed.
● Store lambs are still in bigdemand, especially further south, for all the roots and veg were late to theparty this last season, off the back of a hot summer, they are out in fullforce now. This in turn is keeping the prices buoyant up and down the country. If you have any you would like to move on – please get in touch
● Breeding sheep are starting tomake an appearance – along with some early scanning reports, looking like wehaven’t escaped from the after effects of the hot summer quite yet. If you’relooking to sell in lamb ewes or indeed buy them, please get in touch.
● FCI Forms! Can we please makesure that you’re sending the correct FCI forms - if you don’t it’s a mad rushin the office and just not fun for anyone.
● Again, please shut in hoggs thenight before. Hoggs travel better when empty and don’t arrive green at theirfinal destination. We’ve had several reports of Hoggs coming off the wagonsdirty, which can lead to them having to stand over until they’re dry.
