Trade Update: Friday 6th February 2026

Cattle

The prime cattle trade could best be described as sticky. AHDB reports UK slaughtering’s are running around 1% ahead of last year. Base prices generally in the region of 625–635p/kg. Good premiums remain available for native-sired cattle.

Cull cows continue to be keenly competed for, with numbers beginning to tighten slightly. The trade has stood on but it feels like the next movement will be up. Well-fleshed butcher-type cows and boning cows are required weekly to meet good demand. Please contact the office or your local fieldsman to discuss marketing options ahead of calving.

Store cattle remain in strong demand, including forward stores for finishing and longer-keep cattle for grazing. Overall trade remains very buoyant.

Sheep

Demand for hoggs is very strong ahead of the Muslim festival later this month, with the trade firmer on the week. Deadweight hoggs have generally been 690–700p/kg in the last 7 days, with the prospect of further rises into next week. Limited kill space is available in some areas — please get in touch if you have any ready.

While demand is undoubtedly stronger, weather conditions are also influencing performance, with lambs proving harder to finish in some eastern areas unless supplemented with concentrate feed.

There is increased interest in lighter lambs (under 36kg) ahead of Ramadan, this may suit maternal-sired sheep or tup lambs. As always, please contact us if you’d like advice on marketing options.

Organics
Demand remains very strong for Scottish and English organic prime cattle, with premiums well in excess of 100p/kg available in some cases. Organic store cattle are both wanted and available.

Organic prime hoggs continue to attract premiums, typically 10–15p/kg above conventional prices.
