Cattle
Prime cattle prices continue to ease, with plentiful supplies available on the home market. Base prices are typically 630–640p/kg, around 20p ahead of the same week last year. A short-term recovery looks unlikely at this stage until numbers tighten, which often happens in March. Premiums for native cattle remain at 10–15p/kg. AHDB reports that year-on-year beef imports in November from Australia and New Zealand have tripled, which is clearly extremely disappointing.
In contrast, the cow trade has firmed, up around 5p/kg, driven by strong demand for processing beef. More cows are required every week, particularly well-fleshed premium beef cows and boning dairy types.
After some barnstorming prices through January, the store cattle trade has eased slightly. That said, prices remain very firm by historic standards. Cheaper store values will help finishers, many of whom are currently complaining about extremely poor margins. We have a number of farmers looking for forward cattle as well as cattle for grass… when it comes!
Sheep
The trade for hoggs has lifted over the past week, which is extremely welcome news. More hoggs are required next week, with prices up around 20p on the week, now typically 675–700p/kg. Bigger lambs are trading to 650p/kg.
If you are booking lambs that are likely to kill out at more than 22kg deadweight, please let your fieldsman know. This allows us to ensure heavier lambs are directed to an abattoir that can handle excess weights, or are killed on a day when larger carcasses are being processed. Your help with this is much appreciated. If you are unsure, or would like a second opinion, please get in touch and we are happy to come out and help.
Please also be aware that some batches of sheep are deteriorating quickly in the poor weather, particularly where there may be a parasite burden or nutritional challenge.
Organics
We haveexcellent demand for Scottish and English organic prime cattle, with morerequired for pickup in two weeks. Premiums well in excess of 100p/kg areavailable.
Farm StockScotland also has very strong interest in organic store cattle from bothScottish and English members.
Premiumsfor organic prime hoggs have remained firm this week, typically 15–20p/kg
