Please continue to be aware of the Bluetongue regulations, which are changing and being updated regularly. We are able to move finished cattle, cows and lambs out of D&G, and we also have buyers for store cattle and store lambs within the zone. Please speak to your fieldsman if you require any further information.
Cattle
The prime cattle trade has plateaued for now, with supply and demandevenly balanced. Good batches continue to move quickly, with most cattletrading at 610–615p/kg. More prime cattle and young bulls are wanted everyweek. Demand for Angus and Shorthorn cattle remains positive.
Cull cow base prices continue to fall, probably much further than many had anticipated. There is a short waiting list for moving plainer cows into most processors. This downturn is due to larger numbers coming forward in England and poor demand for mince from the European food-service sector during the summer holidays. Demand for well-fleshed cows remains better. Plainer cows traded at 480–500p/kg in the last week, with the best fed cows reaching510p/kg. If you have cows coming forward, please contact your fieldsman as soon as possible.
If you are looking to sell store cattle in September, please get in touch. We have an extensive list of active buyers looking for large numbers of store cattle exclusively on a farm-to-farm basis. If you are likely to have cattle to sell, please give us a call to discuss the benefits.
Sheep
We have excellent demand for prime lambs from all areas, with lambs trading at 680–700p/kg. More lambs are wanted to meet superb demand from ten abattoirs in the last week. We have particularly strong demand for standard-weight lambs. With a lot of under-finished lambs around, demand for light lambs has been more lacklustre, but hopefully this will improve soon.
Non-farm-assured lambs are trading to 680p/kg, with more required every week tomeet export demand. Please note that a VAN number from your local veterinarypractice is required for all non-farm-assured sheep.
Cull ewes are trading to 410p/kg on the grid. Good batches of well-fleshed ewes are required.
Store lambs remain stickier than earlier in the season due to the chronic lack of grass in the south of the UK. We have some excellent batches of lambs coming forward in September—please get in touch if you are looking for any.
Organics
Organic prime cattle have stood on for another week at 740p/kg, which is extremely welcome for organic finishers. The biggest organic cattle cleared £3,000 this week.
Organic lamb demand feels a touch sharper, with standard-weight organic lambs attracting a premium of 30–40p/kg.
Some excellent batches of organic lambs and cattle are becoming available in September, with buyers from Wales to Aberdeenshire hungry for stock.
Please phone the office or contact your fieldsman to discuss the options available.
