Trade Update – Friday 20th February 2026
Cattle
Prime cattle have held firm over the past week, with the majority trading at 625–635p/kg on the R grade. Numbers forward remain plentiful, though processors continue to report subdued retail beef performance, particularly for higher-value steak cuts. One southern processor is reported to have heavily discounted approximately 30 tonnes of sirloin to stimulate movement.
According to AHDB data, beef volumes are down year-on-year, although prices remain historically strong.
Cull cow numbers are increasing, particularly for dairy cows, as several milk processors introduce significant penalties for over-production ahead of March. This is unusual for the time of the year. Producers considering marketing dairy cows are encouraged to act promptly. Cow base trade:540–560p/kg (specification and weight dependent) Well-fleshed beef cows and all types fed cows remain keenly sought for premium outlets.
Store cattle continue to sell to an exceptionally strong trade, especially for top-quality lots. With the tax year-end approaching, many finishers and farmer buyers are actively adjusting stocking levels and marketing plans.
Beef × dairy calves are currently available both on and off milk.
Sheep
BOOM! Prices have surged as the week progressed, with base quotes ranging from 725–760p/kg, driven by tighter supplies following earlier poor weather and robust processor demand. In comparison, hogg’s traded at710–740p/kg during the same week last year.
Demand remains extremely strong, and additional hoggs are required from most areas for next week. Trade chatter suggests prices may hold in the short term, though markets remain volatile. With Easter falling earlier this year on the 5thApril), marketing decisions over the coming weeks will be particularly important to maximise returns.
Overall quality is reported as very good, although some “clear-out” consignments are now appearing. Accurate descriptions of weight, finish, and uniformity will help maximise returns.
Organics
Organic hoggs are attracting a healthy premium of around 20p/kg. More are needed every week to meet the current strong demand. (Scottish and English)
