March 2025

Friday 14th March 2025

The first day of spring has sprung this week, and what a glorious week it’s been, frosty mornings and glorious blue skies! What a week to be born in. Hopefully Mother Nature continues to be kind to us as the calving and lambing season progresses. Good luck and we will see you all on the other side!

Cattle

Prime

Prime cattle prices are still going strong, with another 10p being thrown into the mix, with prices hitting the 680-5ppk and Angus hitting the high notes upto 695ppk! 700ppk is not far away! History is about to be made.

Cow prices are cruising along in the 530-540ppk providing a nice return on the old girls at the end of their life. Trade has never been as strong. Off the back off this we have quite the demand for feeding cows, with many store finishers looking to a slightly cheaper alternative. The demand also remains strong for cull cows up and down the country. Uplift is swift, so any lurking in sheds can be moved on fairly sharpish.

The store cattle arena remains as strong as ever with record prices being recorded and broken on a daily basis it would appear.  Cattle are not hanging about for long with purchasers wanting to get cattle moved quickly, filling up before the eagerly anticipated (for some) price hike that usually comes with the April store sales. Although it will be interesting to see what kind of numbers are filing through the doors when we fall into the new financial year….. but for now cattle are being traded up and down the country. The gloves are off! Let the battle commence.

Cattle of all shapes and sizes are keenly competed for, especially smaller grazing cattle and rougher done cattle. If you are looking for some or thinking of selling some, please get in touch sooner rather than later.

Sheep

Although the Hogg trade has steadied up ever so slightly, the price is still not to be sniffed at, sitting between 720-740ppk with uplift being steady away, give us plenty of notice as the loads are lighter as people head into lambing time, so putting together loads takes a bit more organising so it fits for everyone. A glut of  Heavy hoggs have seen prices  ease ever so slightly as the week has progressed.

We currently have good demand for ewes, which with a number of different outlets handling them we hope to increase ewe numbers going forward, so please get in touch if this is something you would be interested to know more about.

Ewes with lambs at foot are in strong demand going forward, with many people looking to up their numbers after lambing time. We’ve also got people looking to buy later lambing ewes –end of April beginning of May.

Organics

Hoggs

Good standard weight organic hoggs are sitting at a base of 740-780p, depending on location and spec. Demand does remain firm, with organics been swiftly uplifted to avoid losing them to competition.

Cattle

Organic prime cattle are still very much in high demand with the premium stretching higher every week. Currently sitting around  740ppk. Please phone to discuss the options available. Organic store cattle in good demand.

Dispersal of Organic beef cows coming soon. Contact Eilidh Mundell if you would like to be updated when they are available, and details will be provided.
