Trading Update – Friday 18th September 2026
We are delighted to share that Farm Stock Scotland, working in conjunction with two of our farmer members in our store cattle supply chain, won a silver medal at last week’s World Steak Challenge in Amsterdam. The competition attracted more than 600 entries from around the world, making this a fantastic achievement for everyone involved.
Cattle
Prime cattle prices have firmed slightly as demand has picked up, which is excellent news. We are currently in the seasonal transition between grass-finished and housed cattle, which can cause supply to tighten or increase depending on the season.
Cattle have traded at 615–625p/kg in the last week, with good premiums available for Angus cattle. With the weather becoming more autumnal and schools now back, demand is likely to remain firm. At the time of writing, there is still space available for prime cattle next week, with prices firming again. More cattle are wanted.
Cull cow prices appear to have bottomed out at around the 500p/kg mark. There is currently a short waiting list for dairy cows, so please book them inearly. Beef cows are moving much more quickly, and we need more to meet firmdemand.
Store cattle remain keenly sought after. More cattle are wanted for farm-to-farm sale, including all breeds and both suckler- and dairy-bred cattle. We also have new orders for good suckled calves for October, while some excellent batches of English suckler-bred cattle and good heifers are nowcoming forward. Please contact us for further details.
Sheep
We have excellent demand for prime lambs at present, and more are required—particularly from Southern and Central Scotland, as well as the North of England. Lambs have traded at 690–720p/kg in the last week. The strongest demand is coming from the south, with some Scottish abattoirs continuing to operate long waiting lists. More lambs are wanted next week, with prices sharpening again as some retailers actively freeze lamb legs for Christmas.
The latest Defra figures underline the tight supply of finished lambs.UK clean-sheep slaughtering’s between May and August totalled approximately3.38 million head, nearly 266,000, or 7.3%, fewer than during the same periodlast year. This reduced throughput continues to help underpin the firm lambtrade.

Organics
Prime organic cattle have held firm once again in the last week, with generally quick uplifts and premiums of more than 100p/kg. Organic prime lambs are urgently required to meet current orders. More are needed for next week, with the price up 20p/kg on the week. We also have very strong orders for organic store lambs, particularly field lambs that have received both vaccinations.
As always, please phone the office or contact your local fieldsman forfurther information.
