Cattle
Christmas kills are virtually completed now, with prices set to plateau or eases lightly with some (but not all) abattoirs claiming to be almost full for the next few weeks. If you are needing cattle away in 2026 please get them booked in soon. Most cattle in the last week 660-670p/kg on the R. Prices remain well above the 5 year average and over 110p ahead of last year. Attractive premiums available for Angus, Shorthorns and Galloways.
Cull cows remain a very good trade for the time of the year, with keen competition especially for well fleshed beef cows. Best cows to 565p/kg. With 3 full weeks till Christmas if you are wanting to guarantee an uplift of a large number of milkers, please let us know next week.
Store cattle are still moving, with good demand for all classes.
Sheep
November has been an excellent month in terms of lamb values with prices in the last week 680-700p/kg base which is excellent. The trade has been driven by tighter supply and strong exports to Europe. Southern European markets look very strong which is encouraging for December. Some processors are now switching over to big numbers of lights now.
Looking into the Southern hemisphere, Beef and Lamb NZ is forecasting a 1.5% decline in lamb numbers for 2025/26 due to ongoing flock contraction (on top of a 6% decline last year). It will be interesting to see whether this leads to reduced levels of exports to the UK this Winter.
Organics
Organic prime cattle are in strong demand with this set to continue for the foreseeable future with very strong premiums available by historic standards. Organic lamb volumes are running at similar levels to previous years with premiums in the region of 20p/kg or £4/lamb. Organic lamb outlook looks positive as we lookahead into 2026.
